Facade Repairs to Listed Building

The Client appointed JYM to review condition of the main stone façade at a commercial property in Birkenhead. The building is a Grade II listed former transit shed located directly on top of the Queensway tunnel from Liverpool to Birkenhead.

There were concerns regarding the stability of one large stone archway below which is a main entrance to the building.  There were also worries about the condition of fractured and loose stonework and weathered mortar pointing to the main façade.

Sympathetic repairs were specified and implemented to prop and reconstruct part of a large stone archway using matching St Bees Red sandstone, pin fractured masonry and repoint the worst areas of stonework. The work was carried out following consultation with the Local Authority Conservation team.

The project was handed over to the Client’s management team ahead of schedule and on budget with no disruption caused to public or other users of the building.
