Get to know our team members

This month we will be getting to know Stuart Baird who is one of the Partners here at JYM.

Name – Stuart Baird

Position – Partner / Chartered Building Surveyor

Started at JYM – Stuart joined JYM Partnership in 1998

Fun Fact – Instead of taking the traditional year out traveling after University, Stuart joined North West Water and laboured on sewerage works for a year whilst he played darts in the evening, representing Meadow Street’s The Army and Navy in the Preston and District Second Division Darts League. Thailand’s loss was the breweries of Lancashire’s gain. He could have been the Luke Littler before Luke Littler, but opted for a career in Building Surveying instead.

Interesting Fact – Stuart hails from a family of Builders and Surveyors.  His father was also a Building Surveyor at Lancashire County Council and his brother works as a Civil Engineer, making for interesting chat around the dinner table!

Likes – In his role he relishes the challenges of a new project, client or commission that he can help develop.  Outside of work Stuart is a keen golfer who has played since he was young, but now that his 50th year is almost over, the game is getting much harder!

Dislikes – Too much email traffic, people who text “can you phone me” and the non “thank you wave” people in cars.

Latest Projects – Stuart is the practice lead for the MOJ and MOD Commissions.  This work is always a challenge, specifically managing projects whilst working in a dynamic and high security estate.  He has also just completed a Condition Survey roll out of almost 350 sites in the North and Midlands, which also included assessments for RAAC.

Previous Roles – Stuart has been at JYM for over 25 years now, but did work within the Estates Team at the University of Central Lancashire after Graduating.

Phil Young

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our friend and colleague, Phil Young.

Phil was a founding Partner of JYM, starting the Practice with Mick and Dave in 1996, before retiring to spend time with his family and grandchildren.  Phil worked as a Professional Chartered Quantity Surveyor and PM for over 45 years, building many lasting friendships throughout that time.  He will be greatly missed by so many.  Rest in Peace Phil.

If anyone would like further details of arrangements etc, please contact the office and we’ll help where we can.

Structural Repairs to Seafront Apartment Building

Scaffold is starting to go up on first Phase of a wider project to undertake extensive structural repairs to a residential apartment building on the seafront in Lytham St Annes.

Over time, as with any structure, this apartment building has withstood the north west England climate but its sea front location means that the weather conditions can be particularly severe.  Early structural assessments undertaken by Reid Jones Partnership Structural Engineers indicated problems with the façade and so JYM Partnership were engaged by the Management Company to lead a design team to undertake necessary remedial works.

Working with the Management Company, residents, Managing Agent (Realty Management) and consultancy team, JYM Partnership’s Chartered Building Surveyors have put together a scheme of works which will not only repair problems for the long term, we will also add some architectural interest to the façade.

Phase 1 is being completed by Rosslee Construction and is due to complete in Summer 2025.  We are excited to see the results of a lot of hard work.

Get to know JYM Partnership team members

For the next 12 months we will be posting a blog each month on members of the JYM Partnership team. This month we will be getting to know our newest member of the JYM Partnership team Carol.

Name                             Carol Scott

Position                         Office Manager

Started at JYM               November 2024

Fun Fact – Carol is a crazy cat lady and has 3 furry ones and refers to them as “her children” if its cat related then Carol is happy. She even has cat tattoo’s!

Interesting Fact – Carol travelled to New Zealand, Australia & Singapore in 2002 where she did gold panning, tried kayaking for the first time and climbed Franz Josef one of the glaciers in the south island of NZ. Carol wasn’t keen on Australia as it was too big, considering she’s only 5 foot tall that’s understandable! Oh, and Carol has also driven a Tank.

Likes – Cats (A LOT) and chocolate and wine and oh did I say wine?

Dislikes – Butter beans

Latest Projects – Cyber essentials, Constructionline, keeping the partners inline (What I think she means is assisting the partners with whatever they need). Keeping everything updated and ready for the ISO audits in July.

Previous Roles – Carol has worked in a variety of roles over the past 25 years incorporating accounts, payroll, HR, Office Management, ISO lead admin and PA to board of directors. Carol’s most recent experience has been working for an M&E Design Consultants and this experience fits in really well at JYM Partnership.  Carol ensures the office is running like a well oiled machine while the Partners, Building Surveyors & Architects carry on with their day to day roles and don’t need to worry about anything else.

JYM benefits from drone technology

Over the last few years, drones have become an indispensable tool at JYM Partnership.  Making use of this technology allows us to improve our service offering and reduce safety risks.

Traditional building surveys can be time-consuming and resource intensive. They can require extensive equipment, scaffolding, and even multiple surveyors. In contrast, drones can cover large areas swiftly and accurately. This speed doesn’t just save time; it reduces costs and allows our surveyors to be more efficient.

Surveying large, inaccessible, or hazardous structures can pose significant safety risks.  By using drones, JYM’s surveyors can obtain detailed imagery and data from these areas without ever leaving the ground. This minimises the need for potentially dangerous manual inspections and keeps JYM surveyors safe while still gathering critical information.

Drones are ideal for inspecting hard-to-reach areas, like roofs, gutters, or tall façades. The ability to access remote areas quickly and safely means JYM’s surveyors can identify issues that might be missed using traditional methods and provide Clients with quick and effective advice on how to prevent or stop building fabric problems.

Below are a few Aerial Survey pictures taken using our drone by our Chartered Building Surveyors whilst out on inspections. A picture can speak a thousand words and clearly shows where roof works are required while the Surveyor keeps both feet firmly on the ground.

Loose, slipped or missing roof slates
Widespread failure of roof coatings
Views of roof surfaces not visible from ground level
It’s always nice to get a full view of the area, especially when the sky is blue.
