All-weather pitches to Sport England and SAPCA standards

The existing external play areas at each school were refurbished to create MUGA pitches designed to Sport England and SAPCA (Sports and Play Construction Association) standards. The new surfaces can be used all year round, without play being stopped by poor weather.

JYM provided architectural design, building surveying, quantity surveying and Principal Designer services, and administered the building contract through to completion.

Planning

Pre-planning discussions with the local planning authority identified several areas of concern, and these were addressed in the final design. Full planning approval was then obtained.

Cost control

Accurate budget costings and pre-tender estimates meant that tenders came in within the budget, and the final account was agreed within the allocated sum.

Working in a live school environment

Because of the length of the contract, part of the work was carried out while the schools were open. We assessed the project risks in detail, which led to temporary access routes being formed and some tasks being scheduled outside school hours.

Clear lines of communication between the contractor, the schools and our team kept everyone aware of upcoming work and kept disruption to a minimum. The works were completed on programme and on budget.

JYM's MUGA experience in schools

We have designed MUGA pitches for a number of primary and secondary schools, with services including planning consultations and submissions, design, and management of works in live school environments. Through these projects we have built up a detailed knowledge of the range of MUGA surfaces and designs available, and a network of specialist manufacturers and installers.
